Zack’s Retirement Reflections: From Saving to Spending

May 26, 2025 | Retirement Planning

One of the most common challenges I see among retirees is this: spending money doesn’t come naturally—especially for many of our clients who’ve been disciplined savers for most of their lives.

They’ve often spent decades building their wealth, and the habits that got them here—saving, investing, planning—are powerful. But now they’re in a different season. The goal is no longer accumulation… it’s enjoyment and intentional use.

I often compare it to climbing a mountain.
The ascent takes strength, discipline, and a specific set of muscles. But once you reach the summit—retirement—the descent requires something different. New muscles. A different mindset.

And for many people, spending in retirement (whether on yourself, loved ones, or charitable causes) can feel scary—even when you have more than enough.

That’s why taking small, intentional steps—baby steps—can help. Whether it’s:

    • Booking a special trip

    • Gifting to your kids or grandkids

    • Donating to a cause you care about

    • Upgrading your lifestyle in a meaningful way

These are not just financial decisions—they’re steps toward aligning your money with what matters most.

And remember: spending doesn’t always mean spending on yourself. It might mean giving, experiencing, or creating something lasting.

These decisions don’t need to be rushed—and they certainly don’t need to be made alone. Sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is take a small, intentional step and see how it feels.

Whether it’s upgrading an experience, giving to someone you care about, or simply allowing yourself to enjoy what you’ve worked so hard for, the goal is to start aligning your money with what matters most to you—at a pace that feels right.

As always, I’m here to support you in that journey.
